Health Care

If you are in the mood to undertake this journey to the end, you can trust your body, even if it hurts. But do not force yourself too far and take care of your health in order to avoid future problems with serious consequences.

You will probably feel the toughness of the journey first on your feet, either because you are not used to walking or because you are wearing inadequate footwear. Ensuing blisters should be treated as follows: draw a needle with cotton thread through the blister, tie the ends of the thread to form a ring. This will function as a fluid drain. Do not remove the skin and disinfect with BETADINE whenever you can. Cover with a dressing to protect. To avoid them, always wear worn and comfortable footwear and two pairs of socks, the first one of plain cotton with no stitches and the second one of thick wool. Before wearing the socks, massage your feet with vaseline.

You can alleviate muscle strains and cramps with massage and a hot water shower before the body cools down, at the end of the each journey. Do some muscle stretching with exercises and whenever you can, take a rest with your legs stretched, raised above your body to increase the circulation. In this way, you will protect yourself and avoid a tendon strain, always painful and liable to prevent you from resuming your journey. If it happens, you should use an anti-inflammatory painkiller. In case of a sprain, tie it up and take extra care.

You should drink water frequently to avoid dehydration. If you are prone to low blood pressure after physical strain, you should have some handy sweets or dried fruits.

Protect from the sun, always covering your head and using a sun-block cream. You should use a mosquito repellent to avoid the mosquito bites frequent in marshes.

Do not forget your usual medicine if you take any. Finally, we advise you to bring a brief Medical History in case of having to go to the hospital, either in Portugal or Spain.
