Equipment

Equipment Your knapsack should be waterproof, soft, with double stitching, back cushioned, with a system appropriate to the type of walking and with 45 litres or 8 kg capacity. Common sense must prevail as you will fell the knapsack is heavy after some miles or there will always something missing!

Besides the sleeping-bag, take a small matress because you will have to sleep on the floor, sometimes.

As for what to wear, take 2 or 3 pairs of trousers or shorts, 2 or 3 cotton t-shirts, a jumper or a polar lined raincoat (it may rain in Summer) for the cold nights, several pairs of cotton or wollen socks with no stitches and underwear. Be reasonable with your choice as clothes are heavy.

As for footwear, you should bring a pair of waterproof trekking boots, larger than your usual size, already worn and comfortable and a pair of shoes to rest your feet at the end of each journey. We do not advise tennis shoes or sandals.

You must bring everything you need for your personnal hygiene: tissues, bath towel, toilet paper and soap (not always provided in hostels); a hat, cap or beret; a flask or bottle of water and a walking stick or staff, a much needed object to maintain the rhythm of your walking or to lean your body on and activate the circulation in your hands and arms.

If you want to be publically identified as a Pilgrim, you should add the yellow scallop-shell and a rosary. It is up to you to bring your mobile + battery, camera, lantern, map or a guide, a notebook and a pen.

Do not forget your identity card, health certificate, pilgrim card, credit card and some cash in Euros. Finally, two warnings - always wear two pairs of socks, the first one of plain cotton with no stitches and the second one of thick wool to prevent the continuous friction of your feet in the loose-laced boots; always choose easily washed and dried clothes as this may be necessary.
